In our research, as students pursued study of either the traditional GCE AS Mathematics or the GCE AS Use of Mathematics ,we found a number of distinct differences in learning and outcomes due to their different programmes. In the Use of Mathematics the coursework assessment and use of technology provided learners with different modes of learning that for many afforded opportunities for deep understanding. Drop out rates were high for students who had relatively low GCSE grades although the Use of Mathematics programme was significantly better in retaining students.
